What your rising sign is
The Earth turns once every twenty-four hours, and as it turns the whole zodiac appears to rise over the eastern horizon. Your rising sign — the Ascendant, or Lagna in Sanskrit — is whichever sign was coming up at the exact minute and exact place you were born.
That makes it the most personal point in your chart. Everyone born on your birthday shares your sun sign. Only people born within about two hours of you, in roughly the same part of the world, share your ascendant.
Why astrologers care about it more than you would expect
The ascendant is not just another placement. It is the anchor the rest of the chart is measured from.
Your chart has twelve houses, governing career, marriage, money, health, children, and so on. The ascendant decides which sign sits on which house. Move it by one sign and every house assignment shifts with it — a different planet rules your marriage, a different one rules your career, and the interpretation changes completely.
This is why a Vedic astrologer will refuse to read a chart properly without a birth time, and why a reading based only on your sun sign can feel roughly true but never quite specific.
The lagna lord
The planet ruling your ascendant sign is called the lagna lord, and it carries the whole chart. Its condition — the sign it sits in, the house it occupies, whether it is exalted or debilitated, which planets aspect it — tells an astrologer more about the overall strength of a life than any single other factor.

Rising sign and appearance
Of all the astrological claims, this is the one people find most surprising and most often report as accurate: the ascendant is traditionally linked to physical build, features and bearing. A Libra rising is described as graceful and pleasant-featured; a Capricorn rising as lean and serious, looking older young and younger later; a Scorpio rising by the intensity of the eyes.
The classical description is included below. Treat it as tradition rather than biology, but it is a good check on whether you have the right birth time — if the physical description is badly wrong, the birth time may be too.
Both zodiacs, again
As with the sun sign, there are two systems. Western astrology places the ascendant in the tropical zodiac, Vedic astrology in the sidereal one, and the two differ by the ayanamsa — currently about 24 degrees. Because a sign is 30 degrees wide, your Vedic ascendant will often be one sign earlier than your Western one.

What is a rising sign, exactly?

Why do I need my exact birth time?
The ascendant advances about one degree every four minutes, so it changes sign roughly every two hours. Ten minutes can move it a degree; an hour will often move it a whole sign. Your sun sign is the same for everyone born that day. Your rising sign is not the same for anyone born two hours from you.
What if I do not know my birth time?
We will not guess it. Tick the box and this calculator gives you the entire day's ascendant timetable for your birth place instead, so you can narrow it down from a rough memory like 'before breakfast'. That is more useful, and more honest, than assuming noon and printing one sign.
Why does my rising sign differ from other websites?
Almost always because they use the tropical zodiac and we lead with the sidereal one, or because they defaulted your birth place to a modern timezone offset. We show both zodiacs, and we apply the historical timezone rules in force on your birth date, which matters for any Indian birth before 1946.
Which matters more, sun sign or rising sign?
In Vedic astrology the ascendant is the foundation of the chart and the Moon sign carries most of the prediction; the Sun matters less than Western readers expect. In Western astrology the Sun leads and the ascendant describes presentation. Different systems, different weightings.
What does the degree of my ascendant mean?
Each sign spans thirty degrees, and where you fall in that range says how fully the sign's character has developed in you. Early degrees suggest you are still growing into it, middle degrees a settled expression, late degrees a sign fully worked through and reaching towards the next.
