A name-hash dressed as a percentage is the usual approach here. The number looks meaningful, it is stable for the same two names, and it means nothing at all. The paragraph underneath is drawn from a small pool of generic text keyed to the score band.
This calculator works two different ways and tells you plainly what each one is worth.
Quick mode: name numerology
Quick mode is the light version — but it is real numerology rather than a disguised hash.
Each name produces three numbers in the Chaldean system: the Destiny number from every letter, the Soul Urge from the vowels, and the Personality from the consonants. Each number is ruled by a graha — 1 by the Sun, 2 by the Moon, and so on — and those grahas have fixed friendships with one another, drawn from the same table our chart engine uses.
The score compares your numbers pair by pair through those friendships, weighted by what each pair governs, plus a union number formed from both Destiny numbers together. Your report shows the entire table: every number, every relationship, every point awarded. You can check it by hand.
Full chart matching: Ashtakoot Guna Milan
This is what an Indian astrologer does before a marriage, and it needs both birth charts rather than both names.
Guna Milan compares the two Moon positions across eight factors, or kootas, worth 36 points in total:
- Varna (1 point) — temperament and working nature.
- Vashya (2) — mutual influence and who leads.
- Tara (3) — health and general wellbeing of the match.
- Yoni (4) — physical and sexual compatibility.
- Graha Maitri (5) — mental affinity and friendship.
- Gana (6) — temperament: divine, human or demonic classification.
- Bhakut (7) — emotional harmony and family welfare.
- Nadi (8) — constitutional and genetic compatibility. The heaviest single koota.
A Manglik check is also run on both charts, including the classical cancellations — which is the part many readings leave out, and the part that most often changes the conclusion.
What no compatibility score can tell you
Guna Milan reads the Moon and only the Moon. It does not look at the 7th house, which describes the marriage itself. It does not look at Venus and Mars, which describe attraction. It does not look at which dasha either of you is running, which is how astrologers judge timing.
A high score with a badly afflicted 7th house is not the reassurance it appears to be, and a middling score in two otherwise sound charts is accepted routinely. If the result matters to a real decision, have an astrologer read both charts properly rather than acting on a number from any website, including this one.

Is this love calculator real, or just a random number?
Real, in the sense that every number is reproducible. There is no randomness anywhere in it. Quick mode applies Chaldean name numerology through the friendship of the ruling grahas, and shows you the entire scoring table. Full mode runs the actual Ashtakoot Guna Milan out of 36 from both birth charts. Enter the same details twice and you will get the same answer, always.
What is the difference between quick mode and full chart matching?
Quick mode scores two names. It is fun, it is transparent, and it is a light test. Full chart matching computes both birth charts and runs the eight-koota, 36-point Guna Milan that an astrologer runs before a marriage proposal, plus a Manglik check. If the two disagree, trust the chart.
What is a good Guna Milan score?
Conventionally 18 out of 36 and above is considered acceptable, 26 and above good, and 32 and above excellent. Below 18 is traditionally treated as a caution. But it is a screening test rather than a verdict, and astrologers routinely accept middling scores where the rest of both charts is sound.
Why does the name-based score differ from the chart score?
Because they measure different things from different inputs. A name is one small signal; two birth charts are a great deal more information. Where they disagree, the chart is the one to rely on.
Does a low score mean we should not be together?
No, and anyone telling you otherwise from a number alone is overreaching. Guna Milan reads only the two Moon positions. It says nothing about the 7th house, the Venus and Mars placements, or the dashas either of you is running. A low score is a reason to have someone look at both charts properly, not a reason to end a relationship.
What is Manglik dosha and does it matter?
It is a placement of Mars in certain houses, traditionally held to bring friction into marriage. It matters less than its reputation: the classical texts list several cancellations, and they apply more often than people assume. Our calculator checks the cancellations rather than just flagging the placement.
Do we both need our exact birth times?
For full chart matching, yes. Guna Milan is calculated from both Moon positions, and the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so an approximate time can shift the nakshatra and change the score. Quick mode needs only your names.
