What the chara karakas are
Jaimini astrology, a system attributed to the sage Jaimini and running alongside the more familiar Parashari tradition, uses a strikingly simple idea: rank the planets by how far through their sign they have travelled, and the ranking itself carries meaning.
A planet at 27 degrees of a sign is nearly finished with it. A planet at 2 degrees has barely begun. The planet furthest along — highest degree within its sign, regardless of which sign — is the Atmakaraka, the significator of the soul. The one least far along is the Darakaraka, the significator of the spouse.
These are called chara — variable — karakas, because they differ from chart to chart, unlike the fixed natural significators where the Sun always signifies the father and the Moon always the mother.

Why the Atmakaraka is read as difficulty
The classical texts are consistent on an unintuitive point: the Atmakaraka usually shows up as the hardest area of the life rather than the easiest. The reasoning is that the soul does not need to work on what it has already mastered.
So a Venus Atmakaraka does not promise a beautiful life of comfort; it makes desire and relationship the material you are working with, including through their excesses. A Saturn Atmakaraka — considered the most spiritually productive of all — brings delay, service and sorrow, and the work is to endure it without turning bitter.
If your Atmakaraka reading describes your most persistent difficulty rather than your greatest gift, that is the system working as intended.
The Darakaraka and marriage
The Darakaraka is one of the most-consulted points in Jaimini astrology, because it describes the spouse concretely — temperament, background, often profession and appearance. People frequently report it as more accurate about who they married than the more general 7th house reading.
It should be read alongside the 7th house, not instead of it. The 7th house describes the marriage; the Darakaraka describes the person.
The status column, and why ours is different

We report the full Panchadha Maitri — the five-fold compound relationship that Parashari astrology uses. It combines the permanent natural friendship between two planets with the temporary friendship created by their positions in your particular chart, giving nine states from Exalted down to Debilitated, including Great Friend, Friend, Enemy and Great Enemy.
A planet in a friend's sign behaves very differently from a planet in an enemy's sign, and collapsing both to "neutral" loses the thing you came to find out.

What is an Atmakaraka?
It is the planet sitting at the highest degree within its sign in your chart. Jaimini astrology calls it the king of the chart and reads it as the soul's standing agenda — the theme you are here to work out, usually through its difficulty rather than its ease.
What does the Darakaraka tell me?
It is the planet at the lowest degree, and it signifies the spouse. It describes the partner you are drawn to, which is frequently not the partner you would describe if someone asked you to list what you want.
Why do seven and eight karaka schemes give different answers?
Because they use different planet lists. Jaimini's scheme uses the seven visible grahas. Parashara's adds Rahu and inserts Pitrikaraka, which shifts every rank below wherever Rahu lands. Both are classical. We compute both and let you switch, rather than picking one and not telling you.
Why is Rahu's degree reversed?
Rahu moves retrograde through the zodiac, so its degree is counted backwards: a Rahu at 2 degrees of a sign is treated as 28. Calculators that skip this step produce a wrong Atmakaraka on any chart where Rahu is in contention, which is a large minority of charts.
What is Karakamsa?
The sign your Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa, the ninth divisional chart. Jaimini reads it as though it were an ascendant in its own right, and it describes the direction the soul's purpose takes. Your report gives it.
Do I need my exact birth time for this?
Less than for the ascendant. The karakas depend only on planetary degrees, and every planet except the Moon moves too slowly for a few hours to change the ranking. The Moon covers about 13 degrees a day, so it is the one that can shift. House positions and the Karakamsa do need an accurate time.
Can two planets be at the same degree?
Occasionally, and then the ranking between them is not settled by the rule alone. We detect that case and flag the adjacent karakas as provisional rather than presenting an arbitrary order as though it were determined.
