What is Mangal Dosha?
Mangal Dosha — also called Manglik dosha, Kuja dosha or Bhaum dosha — is the placement of Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart.
Mars signifies energy, assertion, conflict and desire. In those six houses, all of which touch marriage, home or partnership directly, the tradition holds that its force disturbs married life — friction, delay, or a partner who meets your assertiveness with their own.
It is among the most-feared items in Indian astrology, and its reputation is considerably worse than the classical texts warrant.
Checked from three places, not one
A proper Manglik check does not look at one chart. Mars is checked from three reference points, and how many are affected sets the intensity:
- From the Ascendant — the standard reading and the strongest.
- From the Moon (Chandra Lagna) — the emotional dimension.
- From Venus (Shukra Lagna) — the marriage and desire dimension.
All three affected is Poorna or high Manglik. Two is double Manglik. One is Anshik or partial, and is mild. many readings check only the Ascendant and report a partial dosha as though it were a full one.
The cancellations — the part that usually gets left out
The most useful thing to know about Mangal Dosha: it has more exceptions than almost any other classical rule, and they apply far more often than its reputation suggests.
The dosha is cancelled or substantially reduced when, among other conditions:
- Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn);
- Mars is aspected by or conjunct Jupiter, the great benefic;
- Mars is conjunct or aspected by Saturn;
- Mars is debilitated in Cancer, or combust by proximity to the Sun;
- both partners carry the dosha, in which case it is traditionally held to neutralise;
- certain sign-specific placements, such as Mars in the 2nd in its own sign.
The cancellations are evaluated against your chart. evaluates the cancellations against your actual chart and reports which ones fired — which is frequently the difference between a frightening result and an accurate one.
Whole-sign or cusp? Why two astrologers can disagree
There is a genuine technical disagreement here that nobody warns you about.
A planet's house can be counted two ways: by whole sign, where the whole sign containing the Ascendant is the 1st house, or by cusp (Bhav Chalit), where houses are divided by calculated boundaries. For a planet near a house edge, the two methods give different answers — and therefore different Manglik verdicts.

How seriously to take it
Seriously enough to check properly, and not seriously enough to end a relationship over.
Mangal Dosha is one factor among many. It says nothing about the condition of your 7th house, which describes marriage itself, nor about Venus and Jupiter, which describe attraction and the spouse, nor about the dashas that determine timing. A chart with Mangal Dosha and an otherwise strong 7th house is in better shape than a clean chart with a badly afflicted one.

Traditionally the Hanuman Chalisa, Tuesday fasts, donating red items, and Kumbh Vivah before marriage. Note that wearing red coral is not a default remedy — strengthening an already afflicted Mars makes matters worse, so it needs an astrologer's judgement first.
