What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati — “seven and a half” — is the period when transiting Saturn moves through three signs: the one before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the one after.
Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so three signs takes roughly seven and a half years. Since Saturn needs about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac, most people live through Sade Sati two or three times, at roughly thirty-year intervals.
Note what this is not: it is not a birth-chart placement. It depends on where Saturn is right now relative to where your Moon was at birth, which is why calculating it requires Saturn's actual position across decades rather than a single lookup.
The three phases
Each phase lasts about two and a half years and lands somewhere different.
Rising — Saturn in the 12th from your Moon
The opening stretch. The 12th house governs loss, expenditure and withdrawal, so this phase typically brings rising costs, disturbed sleep, and a thinning-out of the social circle. Responsibility for family often increases. Foreign travel and relocation are common. The characteristic feeling is of carrying something you cannot quite name.
Peak — Saturn over your Moon
The middle stretch, and usually the hardest. Saturn transits directly over the natal Moon, and the Moon is the mind itself — so this phase is felt internally before it appears externally. Confidence drops. Things that mattered stop mattering. It is also the most transformative period of the cycle, and what survives it tends to be yours rather than inherited or assumed.
Setting — Saturn in the 2nd from your Moon
The closing stretch. The 2nd house governs money, family and speech, so financial pressure continues while income steadies, family matters need attention, and careless words do more damage than usual. The rewards for the preceding five years generally arrive here rather than after. The pressure lifts gradually.
Why the dates are not one clean block
This is where most Sade Sati calculators quietly mislead.
Saturn retrogrades for roughly 140 days a year and travels about seven degrees backwards while it does. Near a sign boundary that means Saturn frequently crosses three times — enters the sign, retrogrades back out, then enters again months later.
So a real Sade Sati is often several runs separated by gaps, not one continuous block. People notice this: a period eases off, then returns. Calculators that scan yearly or monthly miss the short middle passages entirely and print a single tidy span.

Shani Dhaiya, the small panoti
Saturn transiting the 4th or 8th house from your Moon is called Shani Dhaiya or the “small panoti”. It runs about two and a half years and is milder than Sade Sati — the 4th affects home and peace of mind, the 8th affects health and sudden change.
It is frequently mistaken for Sade Sati by people who only know that a hard Saturn period is running, so we include it in your timeline and label it clearly.
Is Sade Sati bad?
It has a worse reputation than it deserves, and the reputation itself does damage — people spend seven years braced for catastrophe.
Saturn is the planet of accountability, not malice. It applies pressure to what was not soundly built, and what it removes is generally what could not have lasted anyway. People routinely report the hardest stretch of their life and the most decisive growth of it in the same seven and a half years.
How heavily it lands depends on the rest of your chart. A well-placed Saturn, a strong Moon, or a favourable running dasha all soften it considerably.
