What is a rashi?
Your rashi is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied when you were born — not the Sun. This trips up almost everyone who arrives from Western astrology, where “your sign” means the Sun sign by default.
In Vedic astrology the Moon governs the mind, the emotions and the instinctive self, and it is read as more descriptive of a person's inner life than the Sun. When an Indian astrologer, a newspaper rashifal or a temple priest asks for your rashi, the Moon sign is what they want.
Why your rashi and your sun sign usually differ
Two separate things pull them apart.
First, they are different planets. The Sun takes a year to cross the zodiac; the Moon takes 27.3 days and changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days. There is no reason for them to be in the same sign, and most of the time they are not.
Second, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured from the fixed stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical one, measured from the spring equinox. The two have drifted about 24 degrees apart, which is most of a sign. So even your Sun sign differs between the systems.

The Avakhada Chakra
Your rashi is the entry point to a set of attributes Vedic astrology derives from the Moon's exact position, collectively called the Avakhada Chakra. These are not decorative — they are the literal inputs to marriage matching:
- Nakshatra and pada — your birth star and its quarter, the finest division in common use and the basis of the dasha system.
- Varna — working temperament, worth 1 point in Guna Milan.
- Vashya — mutual influence, 2 points.
- Yoni — physical compatibility, expressed as an animal, 4 points.
- Gana — temperament classed as divine, human or fierce, 6 points.

The name syllable
Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada carries a syllable. A child born in the second pada of Rohini is traditionally named beginning with that pada's sound.
The reasoning is phonetic: the name is spoken thousands of times over a life, and the tradition holds that a name resonating with the birth star supports rather than fights the chart. Whether or not you accept that, it is why Indian families ask an astrologer for a syllable before a naming ceremony — and your report gives you yours.
Does an approximate birth time work?
Usually, yes. The Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days, so for the rashi alone a rough time is normally fine — unlike the Ascendant, which changes every two hours.
The exception is a birth close to a sign change. Your report prints the Moon's exact degree, so you can see how close it was. Under a degree or two from the boundary and the birth time matters. The nakshatra is more demanding again, since the Moon crosses one in about a day.
