What is Kaal Sarp Dosh?
Kaal Sarp Yoga forms when all seven visible grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — fall on one side of the axis between Rahu and Ketu, so the entire chart is confined to half the zodiac.
Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes: not physical bodies, but the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s. In Indian tradition they are the severed head and body of a serpent. The image behind the name is of the chart being swallowed — kaal time, sarp serpent.
The twelve types
Which type you have is decided by the house Rahu occupies, counted from your Ascendant. Rahu in the 1st gives Anant, in the 2nd Kulik, and so on through all twelve. Each is named for a naga and reads onto a different area of life — Anant onto self and marriage, Kulik onto wealth and family, Shankhpal onto home and career, and so on.
This matters more than the bare yes-or-no many readings return. Two people can both “have Kaal Sarp” and be dealing with completely different things.
Full, partial, or not at all
Here is the distinction we think is most worth having, and it is the one most often skipped.
If all seven grahas sit inside the arc, the yoga is fully formed. If six sit inside and one breaks out, it is partial — and the tradition treats a single graha outside the axis as substantially reducing the effect, because the chart is no longer sealed.

How common is it?
Common. Geometrically, the seven grahas fall on one side of the nodal axis in roughly one chart in twenty — which across India alone is tens of millions of people, most of them living ordinary lives.
That figure is worth holding onto if a result here worries you, and worth holding onto especially if someone quotes you a large fee to remove it.
A note on where it comes from
Kaal Sarp Yoga is a relatively late addition to Indian astrology. It does not appear in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra or the other classical foundations, and a number of respected astrologers regard its modern prominence as overstated — some as a straightforward commercial development.
We compute it accurately because people want to know, and because a chart that has it will hear about it from someone. Treat it as one factor among many rather than a verdict on your life, and read it alongside the placements that carry more classical weight: your running dasha, your Ascendant lord, and the condition of the 7th and 10th houses.
