Which Rudraksha Is Best for Career Growth? A Chart-First Answer
A Taurus lagna and a Leo lagna asking the same career question are traditionally pointed to different beads, 7 Mukhi and 6 Mukhi, because the answer comes from the planet ruling each chart's 10th house, not from a bestseller list.

Which rudraksha for career: the short answer
If you are asking which rudraksha for career growth, the honest answer from the tradition is: it depends on your chart, not on a bestseller list. Astrologers who suggest a rudraksha for work traditionally look at three things first. The 10th house (karma bhava, the house of work and public standing), the planet that rules it, and the dasha (planetary period) you are running now. The bead linked with that planet is then the one usually suggested.
That is why two people asking the same question can be told different beads, and why a generic "best rudraksha for career growth" list often names 1, 5 and 7 Mukhi for everyone. Those beads are popular, not universal.
What the mukhi count actually means
A mukhi is a natural line running from the top of the bead to the bottom. Older Puranic lists, such as the one in the Shiva Purana, tie each face count to a deity: the one-faced bead to Shiva and the five-faced bead to Kalagni Rudra, for example. Later devotional practice adds links such as Mahalakshmi for the seven-faced bead and Durga for the nine-faced bead.
The link to planets is a later, astrological layer, and it is the one that matters for a chart-first choice. In the scheme most astrologers use today:
| Mukhi | Planet commonly linked | Work themes astrologers associate |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mukhi (also 12 Mukhi) | Sun | Authority, leadership, government and administration |
| 2 Mukhi | Moon | Public dealing, care work, hospitality |
| 3 Mukhi | Mars | Technical work, engineering, uniformed services, sport |
| 4 Mukhi | Mercury | Trade, accounts, writing, speaking, analysis |
| 5 Mukhi | Jupiter | Teaching, advisory work, law, finance roles |
| 6 Mukhi | Venus | Arts, media, design, luxury and beauty trades |
| 7 Mukhi | Saturn | Steady service, industry, labour-heavy and long-haul work |
| 8 Mukhi | Rahu | Unconventional fields, technology, foreign links |
| 9 Mukhi | Ketu | Research, specialised and behind-the-scenes work |
Some astrologers use other mappings, so treat this as one widely used scheme rather than a settled rule. It is a map of themes, not a list of who succeeds at what.
Check your 10th house before choosing a bead
This is the step most rudraksha lists skip. You need your birth date, exact birth time and place, because the 10th house depends on your ascendant (lagna), and the lagna changes roughly every two hours.
- Find your lagna. Make your free chart on the kundli page. The lagna is the sign in the first house.
- Count to the 10th house and note its sign. Its ruler is your 10th lord, the planet tradition reads first for work.
- See where the 10th lord sits and whether it looks strong (own or exalted sign, a good house) or strained (debilitated, in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or closely with Rahu or Ketu).
- Note your running Mahadasha and Antardasha. The kundli page shows your Vimshottari dasha: the period you are in and the ones ahead.
- Only then match a bead. Usually the 10th lord's bead, and sometimes the dasha lord's bead if that period is the one shaping work now.
The 10th lord for each lagna
| Lagna | 10th house sign | 10th lord | Bead commonly linked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries (Mesha) | Capricorn | Saturn | 7 Mukhi |
| Taurus (Vrishabha) | Aquarius | Saturn | 7 Mukhi |
| Gemini (Mithuna) | Pisces | Jupiter | 5 Mukhi |
| Cancer (Karka) | Aries | Mars | 3 Mukhi |
| Leo (Simha) | Taurus | Venus | 6 Mukhi |
| Virgo (Kanya) | Gemini | Mercury | 4 Mukhi |
| Libra (Tula) | Cancer | Moon | 2 Mukhi |
| Scorpio (Vrishchika) | Leo | Sun | 1 or 12 Mukhi |
| Sagittarius (Dhanu) | Virgo | Mercury | 4 Mukhi |
| Capricorn (Makara) | Libra | Venus | 6 Mukhi |
| Aquarius (Kumbha) | Scorpio | Mars | 3 Mukhi |
| Pisces (Meena) | Sagittarius | Jupiter | 5 Mukhi |
Notice that this is your lagna, not your Moon sign. A Moon-sign table gives a different answer, and for career questions astrologers in the Parashari tradition usually read from the lagna.
A worked sample: one chart, read step by step
Sample chart. Taurus lagna. The 10th house is Aquarius, so the 10th lord is Saturn. Saturn sits in the 11th house in Pisces. The person is running Mercury Mahadasha with a Venus Antardasha.
What an astrologer would traditionally note.
- For a Taurus lagna, Saturn rules both the 9th and the 10th houses, which classical texts call a yogakaraka: a planet that is especially helpful for that ascendant. A 10th lord in the 11th house, the house of gains, is usually read as work that pays off over time rather than quickly.
- Mercury, the running dasha lord, rules the 2nd (income, speech) and 5th (intelligence) for Taurus. Its 17-year period is often read as a time when skills, communication and learning drive work.
What tradition would suggest. The first bead usually named for this chart is the 7 Mukhi, for Saturn as 10th lord and yogakaraka. Some astrologers would add or prefer the 4 Mukhi while Mercury's period runs, because the dasha lord is the planet "in charge" of these years.
What it does not mean. It does not mean this person will be promoted, switch jobs or earn more. It describes the themes astrologers read for that period. The person's real choices, skills, market and timing still decide the outcome.
Now compare a Leo lagna: the 10th is Taurus, ruled by Venus, so the same question gets a 6 Mukhi answer. Same goal, different chart, different bead. That is the whole point.
Matching the bead to the problem you actually have
If you already know your chart, these are the beads most often suggested for work, with what our store stocks.
7 Mukhi: for Saturn as 10th lord, or a Saturn period
The bead most often named for steady, long-haul career building, and for people running Saturn's 19-year Mahadasha or Sade Sati. It is also linked with Mahalakshmi, which is why it appears in money lists too. Our 7 Mukhi guide covers it in detail. The Certified 7 Mukhi Nepali Rudraksha Pendant is described on its listing as a natural bead with seven face lines that "comes with certification for authenticity".
4 Mukhi and 5 Mukhi: for Mercury and Jupiter roles
The 4 Mukhi is the usual suggestion for a rudraksha for business in trade, accounts or sales, and for people whose work runs on speaking and writing (Mercury as 10th lord or dasha lord). The 5 Mukhi, linked with Jupiter, is the everyday bead many people wear regardless of chart, and is traditionally suggested for teaching, advisory and finance roles. The certified 4 Mukhi bead and the original 5 Mukhi Nepali bead each state on their listing that they come "with a certificate of authenticity".
1 Mukhi: for the Sun, authority and administration
Tradition links the Sun with government, rank and leadership, so the 1 Mukhi (and the 12 Mukhi, which we do not stock) is the bead named when the Sun rules or strongly influences the 10th house. Many people asking for a rudraksha for job in government start here; our government job guide explains the houses and dashas astrologers actually read for that question. The Certified 1 Mukhi Round Nepali Rudraksha Pendant "comes with certification for authenticity", per its listing.
9 Mukhi: for a Ketu period, pressure and competition
The 9 Mukhi is linked with Durga and, in the planetary scheme, with Ketu. It is traditionally suggested during a Ketu Mahadasha (seven years) or Antardasha, a period astrologers often describe as uncertain or inward-looking for work, and for people in highly competitive fields who want a devotional anchor for courage. See the 9 Mukhi guide. The Certified Nepali 9 Mukhi Rudraksha Pendant is described on its listing as "fully certified to ensure its natural origin and quality". No certificate can prove where a bead grew; see what a certified rudraksha certificate proves before relying on that wording.
For Mars charts there is a 3 Mukhi Nepali bead, and for Venus charts a 6 Mukhi Nepali bead; the rest are in the rudraksha beads collection. We do not stock a 2 Mukhi or a 12 Mukhi.
When two beads point different ways
Charts are rarely tidy. A few rules of thumb astrologers traditionally use:
- 10th lord first, dasha lord second. The 10th lord describes your work life as a whole; the dasha lord describes these years. If you wear one bead, many astrologers start with the 10th lord's.
- Be careful with a dasha lord that is difficult for your lagna. Some astrologers avoid strengthening a planet that rules the 6th, 8th or 12th house for you. Rudraksha is commonly said to be gentler than gemstones in this respect, but opinions differ, so it is worth asking before wearing one for a hard planet.
- Combinations are common. A 5 Mukhi mala with one chart-specific bead is a traditional way to wear more than one. Keep it simple; more beads do not mean more effect.
- No birth time? Then the lagna is unknown and the 10th house cannot be read. The 5 Mukhi is the usual general-purpose choice in that case.
If you would rather talk it through, Astroliya's AI astrologer can read your calculated chart in chat and explain your 10th lord and dasha in plain words. It is an AI, it explains what the tradition reads rather than promising outcomes, and it gives no medical, legal or financial advice.
How rudraksha is traditionally worn
- Day: Monday is the most common day to begin, as the day of Shiva. Some start a planet-linked bead on that planet's weekday (Saturday for 7 Mukhi, Wednesday for 4 Mukhi).
- Preparation: wash the bead in clean water, offer it at your home shrine, and chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times. Bead-specific mantras exist but vary between texts; Om Namah Shivaya is widely used for all of them.
- Thread or metal: a red or black silk thread, or a silver or gold cap. Many people prefer the bead to touch the skin.
- Care: remove it before soap, chlorine and sleep if you prefer, and oil it lightly now and then so it does not dry and crack.
How to tell a genuine bead from a carved fake
Natural mukhi lines run continuously from end to end and sit in the bead's own grooves; carved lines look sharp, shallow or uneven. The water test and the coin test are not reliable proof either way. A lab certificate is useful only if it names the lab and matches the bead in front of you. Our guides on identifying an original rudraksha and on what a certificate proves go further.

Questions people ask
Which rudraksha is best for career growth?
There is no single best bead. Tradition suggests the bead linked with your 10th lord, and sometimes your running dasha lord, so a Taurus lagna is usually pointed to 7 Mukhi and a Leo lagna to 6 Mukhi. The 5 Mukhi is the common general choice when no birth time is known.
Which rudraksha is good for business?
Astrologers most often name the 4 Mukhi, linked with Mercury, the planet of trade and communication. If your chart's 10th lord is a different planet, that planet's bead is usually suggested first.
Can a rudraksha help me get a job?
No bead can get anyone a job. In the tradition, a rudraksha is a devotional support worn with prayer and steady effort. Applications, skills and preparation do the work.
Can I wear two rudraksha for career at the same time?
Yes, many people do, most often a chart-specific bead with a 5 Mukhi mala or bead. Ask about any planet that is difficult for your lagna before strengthening it.
Is a gemstone better than a rudraksha for career?
They are different traditions. Gemstones are commonly said to amplify a planet strongly and are prescribed more cautiously; rudraksha is usually described as gentler. Neither replaces practical career decisions.
