Rashi Compatibility for Marriage: What Your Moon Sign Decides in Guna Milan, and What It Doesn't
The "Leo and Libra" chart in a magazine is usually about Sun signs. Kundli matching uses Moon signs, and even then the two signs control only 15 of the 36 gunas.

When families ask about rashi compatibility for marriage, they usually mean one question: do our two signs suit each other? In Vedic matching the answer is narrower than most sign-pair lists suggest. Your rashi here is your Moon sign, and in the Ashtakoota method of Guna Milan the two Moon signs decide only four of the eight kootas. Those four are worth up to 15 of the 36 points. The other 21 points come from the two birth nakshatras, which a sign alone cannot show.
That split explains a pattern families often notice: two signs that look ideal together can still produce an ordinary score, and a pair the sign tables rate poorly can come out well once the nakshatras are counted.
What rashi compatibility for marriage actually measures
Start with which sign counts. Popular zodiac compatibility charts use the Western Sun sign, set by your birth date alone. Vedic kundli matching uses the sidereal sign the Moon occupied at your birth, which needs your date, time and place. For many people the two are different signs, so a "Leo and Libra" reading from a magazine may not be about your Moon signs at all.
If you don't know your Moon sign, a free kundli shows it, along with your birth nakshatra. A naam rashi taken from the first syllable of your name is a different thing again; our guide to rashi by name explains why it can disagree with the Moon sign.
In the Parashari matching tradition, the eight kootas and their maximum points are fixed. Here is where each one is read from:
| Koota | Max points | Read from | What it is traditionally said to show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Moon sign | Work style and outlook |
| Vashya | 2 | Moon sign | Mutual attraction and give-and-take |
| Tara | 3 | Birth nakshatra | Harmony between the two birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Birth nakshatra | Physical and intimate compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Moon sign | Friendship of the sign lords, the "mental wavelength" |
| Gana | 6 | Birth nakshatra | Temperament: gentle, balanced or intense |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Moon sign | Family life and shared growth |
| Nadi | 8 | Birth nakshatra | Wellbeing and family continuity |
Add the Moon-sign rows and you get 1 + 2 + 5 + 7 = 15 points. The nakshatra rows give 3 + 4 + 6 + 8 = 21 points. So moon sign compatibility is real in this system, but it is the smaller share of the total. For the full method, see Guna Milan explained.
The four sign-based kootas, one by one
Varna (1 point)
Each sign belongs to a varna group by element: water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) rank highest, then fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), then earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), then air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius). The classical rule gives the point when the groom's group is equal to or higher than the bride's. It is the smallest koota, and it is one of the few that reads differently depending on who is the bride and who is the groom.
Vashya (2 points)
Signs fall into five groups: quadruped (Aries, Taurus), human (Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius), water (Cancer, Pisces), wild (Leo) and insect (Scorpio). Two signs change group halfway through: the first 15 degrees of Sagittarius count as human and the last 15 as quadruped, while Capricorn starts as quadruped and ends as water. Same group scores the full 2; other pairings score 1, half a point or nothing. Because of the half-sign split, two people both "Capricorn Moon" can land in different Vashya groups.
Graha Maitri (5 points)
This compares the planets that rule the two Moon signs. Seven planets rule the twelve signs, so instead of a 144-cell grid you need only the 7 by 7 table below. Find each person's sign in the first column or the header and read the cell. Both directions of friendship are counted, which is why some pairs land on half points.
| Sign lord | Sun | Moon | Mars | Mercury | Jupiter | Venus | Saturn |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun (Leo) | 5 | 5 | 5 | 4 | 5 | 0 | 0 |
| Moon (Cancer) | 5 | 5 | 4 | 1 | 4 | 0.5 | 0.5 |
| Mars (Aries, Scorpio) | 5 | 4 | 5 | 0.5 | 5 | 3 | 0.5 |
| Mercury (Gemini, Virgo) | 4 | 1 | 0.5 | 5 | 0.5 | 5 | 4 |
| Jupiter (Sagittarius, Pisces) | 5 | 4 | 5 | 0.5 | 5 | 0.5 | 3 |
| Venus (Taurus, Libra) | 0 | 0.5 | 3 | 5 | 0.5 | 5 | 5 |
| Saturn (Capricorn, Aquarius) | 0 | 0.5 | 0.5 | 4 | 3 | 5 | 5 |
Two signs with the same lord, such as Aries and Scorpio or Taurus and Libra, always take the full 5.
Bhakoot (7 points)
Bhakoot counts how far one Moon sign is from the other. It is all or nothing: the pair scores 7, or it scores 0 and is called Bhakoot dosha.
Which rashi is compatible with which rashi: the Bhakoot table
Because Bhakoot is the largest sign-based koota, it is the closest thing to a straight answer to which rashi is compatible with which rashi. Pairs that sit 1/1 (same sign), 3/11, 4/10 or 7/7 from each other score the full 7. Pairs at 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 score 0.
| Your Moon sign | Full 7 points with | 0 points with |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Aries, Gemini, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius | Taurus, Leo, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Taurus | Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius, Pisces | Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn |
| Gemini | Gemini, Aries, Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | Taurus, Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn, Aquarius |
| Cancer | Cancer, Taurus, Virgo, Libra, Aries, Capricorn | Gemini, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Pisces |
| Leo | Leo, Taurus, Gemini, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius | Aries, Cancer, Virgo, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Pisces |
| Virgo | Virgo, Gemini, Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Pisces | Aries, Taurus, Leo, Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius |
| Libra | Libra, Aries, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius, Capricorn | Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio, Aquarius, Pisces |
| Scorpio | Scorpio, Taurus, Leo, Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius | Aries, Gemini, Cancer, Libra, Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Sagittarius | Sagittarius, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius, Pisces | Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn |
| Capricorn | Capricorn, Aries, Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Pisces | Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius, Aquarius |
| Aquarius | Aquarius, Aries, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius | Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, Pisces |
| Pisces | Pisces, Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Capricorn | Aries, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius |
A 0 here is not a verdict on the marriage. Classical texts describe several conditions under which Bhakoot dosha is considered softened or cancelled, for example when the two sign lords are friends or the same planet. Our Bhakoot dosha guide walks through the 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 pairs and those exceptions.
Put the two tables together and you have a quick, honest estimate of the sign side: up to 1 for Varna, up to 2 for Vashya, the Graha Maitri cell, and 7 or 0 for Bhakoot.
Why two compatible rashis can still score low
The sign side is only part of the count. Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi depend on the birth nakshatras, and each rashi holds parts of three nakshatras. Two people with the same pair of Moon signs can therefore get very different totals. The two pairs below are illustrations worked through the standard Ashtakoota tables, not real couples.
- Pair A: bride's Moon in Aquarius (Dhanishta nakshatra), groom's Moon in Taurus (Mrigashira nakshatra). The signs sit 4/10, their lords Saturn and Venus are mutual friends: an attractive sign pair by any list.
- Pair B: bride's Moon in Aries (Bharani), groom's Moon in Virgo (Uttara Phalguni). The signs sit 6/8 and their lords Mars and Mercury are not friendly: a pair many sign charts would mark as poor.
| Koota | Pair A: Aquarius and Taurus | Pair B: Aries and Virgo |
|---|---|---|
| Varna (1) | 1 | 0 |
| Vashya (2) | 1 | 1 |
| Graha Maitri (5) | 5 | 0.5 |
| Bhakoot (7) | 7 | 0 |
| Sign-side subtotal (15) | 14 | 1.5 |
| Tara (3) | 3 | 3 |
| Yoni (4) | 2 | 2 |
| Gana (6) | 1 | 6 |
| Nadi (8) | 0 | 8 |
| Total (36) | 20 | 20.5 |
Pair A is nearly perfect on the sign side, yet both nakshatras fall in the same Nadi, so it scores 0 there and carries Nadi dosha, which tradition weighs heavily because Nadi carries the most points of any koota. Pair B looks weak on signs but recovers almost every nakshatra point; it still carries Bhakoot dosha, which would be checked for cancellation. Both end near 20, above the traditional threshold of 18, and both have one dosha that needs a closer look. Neither result could have been predicted from the sign names.
What a sign pair does and doesn't mean:
- It does set a ceiling and a floor for 15 of the 36 points, and it tells you in advance whether Bhakoot dosha is present.
- It does not tell you Tara, Yoni, Gana or Nadi, so it cannot tell you whether Nadi dosha is present.
- It does not decide whether a match is "good". Totals are read in bands, and how many gunas should match explains what 18, 24 or 28 out of 36 is taken to mean.
- It says nothing about Manglik status, the seventh house or the running dasha, which a full reading also considers.
How to check your own match, step by step
- Find both Moon signs and birth nakshatras from accurate birth details with a free kundli.
- Use the two tables above for a quick read of the sign side: Graha Maitri from the lord table, Bhakoot from the sign table.
- Run both charts through the free kundli matching tool. It scores all eight kootas, flags Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, runs the Manglik check and explains each koota in plain words.
- If a dosha is flagged, read what tradition says about its cancellations before drawing conclusions.
- Matching compares two Moons; the rest of each chart is read separately. The marriage compatibility report reads one person's seventh house, Venus, Manglik placement and the periods linked with partnership. For a question about a koota in your own result, you can ask Astroliya's AI astrologer in Hindi or English; it is an AI that explains the tradition, not a person deciding for your family.
If you only have names and no birth times, the love calculator compares two names through Chaldean numerology. It is a different system from Guna Milan, and kundli matching by name explains what a name-only match can and can't tell you.
A bracelet for your rashi
Some people like to wear something linked to their own sign. The Astroliya store's zodiac energy bracelets are made one per rashi, each pairing two natural stones; when we checked in October 2026, Aries, Virgo and Pisces were not listed. A bracelet is a personal choice and a reminder; it does not change a koota score or the compatibility of two charts. Which stone pair goes with each sign is in our zodiac bracelet guide.
Questions people ask
Which rashi is compatible with which rashi for marriage?
On the sign side, a pair is strongest when the two Moon signs sit 1/1, 3/11, 4/10 or 7/7 from each other (full Bhakoot) and their lords are friends (high Graha Maitri). The tables above give both for every sign. That still covers only 15 of 36 points, so the full answer needs the nakshatras too.
Is zodiac compatibility the same as rashi compatibility?
Not usually. Popular zodiac compatibility uses the Western Sun sign from your birth date, while Vedic rashi compatibility uses your sidereal Moon sign, which needs your birth time and place. The two often fall in different signs.
Can we marry if our rashis are not compatible?
A poor sign pair lowers at most 15 points, and in the illustration above a 6/8 pair still reached 20.5 of 36. Tradition also describes cancellations for Bhakoot dosha. Read the full match and the doshas before treating a sign pair as a reason to stop.
Is a same-rashi marriage good?
On the sign side, yes: Bhakoot gives the full 7 and the shared lord gives the full 5 in Graha Maitri. Same-rashi couples often have nearby nakshatras, though, so Nadi and Gana are worth checking carefully in the full match.
Does moon sign compatibility matter more than the guna total?
No. Moon sign compatibility is part of the guna total, not separate from it. Astrologers traditionally look at the total, then at individual doshas such as Nadi and Bhakoot, then at the rest of both charts.
