How AI Astrology Works: What Astroliya's AI Reads in Your Kundli, and What It Won't Do
Where your Saturn sits in an Astroliya reading comes from ephemeris tables built from NASA JPL's DE440, not from a language model. The AI arrives last, to put already-calculated findings into plain Hindi or English, and every AI astrologer is labelled as an AI.

People ask how AI astrology works because the phrase can mean almost anything, from a chatbot inventing a horoscope to a program that actually calculates a birth chart. At Astroliya it works in three separate steps, in a fixed order: the kundli is calculated first, fixed rules then find the facts in it, and only after that does the AI write anything. The AI's job is the last step alone: to explain, in plain Hindi or English, what the first two steps found.
That order is the main thing to understand about accuracy: the AI cannot move a planet or change what the rules found, though it can still word an explanation badly. If you want to meet the AI astrologers themselves, that is on our AI astrologer page and /astrologers. Every one of them is an AI, and is labelled as one.
How AI astrology works at Astroliya, in three steps
| Step | What happens | Who does it | Can you check it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Calculate | Planet positions, lagna, houses, nakshatra and dasha from your birth details | Astroliya's chart engine, before any AI | Yes, against any panchang or kundli |
| 2. Find | Classical rules look for Sade Sati, Dhaiya, Manglik placement, dasha changes and major transits | Fixed rule code, the same for everyone | Yes, each finding states its rule |
| 3. Explain | Your question is answered in plain words from those facts | The AI | Partly: it points to the findings it used |
The split matters. Steps 1 and 2 are arithmetic and rules; give them the same birth details and they give the same answer every time. Step 3 is language, and language can be wrong. Keeping them apart means a mistake in wording never changes where your Saturn is.
Step 1: from birth details to a sidereal chart
Your date, time and place of birth fix the positions of the planets at that moment. Astroliya calculates them with its own ephemeris tables, generated from JPL DE440, the planetary ephemeris published by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The tables are built ahead of time and read on our servers, so no AI is involved in placing a single planet.
From those positions the engine works out what Jyotish reads:
- Sidereal positions with the Lahiri ayanamsa. Vedic astrology measures the zodiac against the fixed stars rather than the seasons, and Lahiri is the usual standard in India. That is why your Vedic sign can differ from a newspaper column's sign.
- Lagna and houses. The rising sign at your birth place becomes the 1st house, and each following sign is the next house.
- Rashi and nakshatra. The Moon's sign and its lunar mansion, one of 27.
- Vimshottari dasha. The planetary periods that set the timing of a reading, counted from the Moon's exact position in its nakshatra.
You can see all of this for your own birth details on the free kundli. It is the same chart the AI astrologer reads from, so what you see there is what it sees.
Step 2: fixed rules find the facts before the AI writes anything
Before your question reaches the AI, rule code goes through your chart and real transit dates for the coming twelve months. Each rule is a classical one, written down once and applied the same way to every chart:
- Sade Sati: is Saturn passing the 12th, 1st or 2nd sign from your Moon sign, and in which phase? Background is in what Sade Sati is.
- Saturn Dhaiya: is Saturn in the 4th or 8th sign from your Moon?
- Manglik placement: is Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from your lagna? What that does and does not mean is in our Manglik dosha explainer.
- Dasha: which Mahadasha and Antardasha are running, and when the next one begins.
- Major transits: Jupiter moving through the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th sign from your lagna (from your Moon sign without a birth time), houses tradition counts as supportive, and Rahu or Ketu crossing your Moon sign or lagna.
Each finding comes out with a title, its dates, a severity (important, moderate or informational) and, most usefully, its reason: the rule and the placement that triggered it, such as "Mars sits in your 7th house". A rule that does not apply produces nothing. The AI cannot add a finding that the rules did not produce.
Step 3: the AI explains the findings and points to them
Now the AI gets your question, your chart and the findings. Its instructions are narrow: answer from these facts, in the tradition's language, never work out a score or a placement itself, and tag each finding it relies on so the app can show that finding's card under the reply. It is a language model, so it can still word something badly or slip; the cards are there so you can check the reply against the rule rather than take it on trust.
This is also where an AI kundli reading earns its keep. A list of findings is accurate but dry; most people want to know what "Antardasha of the Moon in Venus Mahadasha" might mean for a job change. The AI translates, connects the findings to your question, and answers follow-ups, in Hindi or English, at whatever hour you ask.
Written reports work the same way and say so on the page: calculated from your chart, written with AI, and passed through automated checks against traditional Jyotish rules. The astrology report guide explains which report answers which question.
A worked example (an illustration, not a real person)
The birth details below are made up, and the table is an illustration of the kind of findings the rules produce, written for this article rather than copied from a live chart.
Suppose the chart has Taurus (Vrishabha) as the Moon sign, Mars in the 7th house from the lagna, and is running Venus Mahadasha with Moon Antardasha. The person asks in October 2026: "Is next year a good time to change jobs?"
| Finding | Rule behind it | Dates | What tradition reads into it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sade Sati, phase 1 | Saturn enters Aries, the 12th sign from a Taurus Moon | From 3 June 2027; Saturn returns to Pisces on 20 October 2027 | A slower, more demanding stretch; effort over shortcuts |
| Manglik, Mars in 7th house | Mars in one of the six Manglik houses from the lagna | Lifelong | Relevant to marriage matching, not to the job question |
| Moon in Venus Mahadasha | Vimshottari count from the natal Moon | Running now | A period astrologers often read for comfort, people and public dealings |
A reply built on these findings would say that, as tradition reads it, the months before June 2027 sit inside a Venus-Moon period often linked with people and visibility, and that Saturn's move into Aries from 3 June starts the first phase of Sade Sati, which astrologers traditionally read as a time for steady, well-prepared steps rather than abrupt ones. It would note that the Manglik placement concerns marriage matching and has nothing to say about the job. And it would say plainly that a job decision rests on the offer, the money and the person's own situation, which the chart does not see.
The transit dates in that table are Saturn's 2027 dates as published in panchang tables. Everything else about the example person is invented.
Is AI astrology accurate?
The honest answer has two halves, because the steps are different kinds of work.
The calculation is checkable. Planet positions, the lagna, the nakshatra and dasha dates are astronomy and arithmetic. Given correct birth details they come out the same every time, and you can compare them with any reliable panchang or kundli. If they disagree, the usual causes are a different ayanamsa, a different birth time, or the wrong time zone for an older birth.
The interpretation is tradition. What Saturn in the 12th from the Moon "means" comes from classical texts and centuries of practice, not from measurement. Astrologers within the same tradition disagree about it. Astrology is not a proven science, and an AI explaining it does not make it one. So a reading can be faithful to the tradition and still not fit your life.
The AI adds a third risk: it can phrase a finding badly, or lean too hard on one finding. That is why it names the findings it used, so you can look at the rule yourself rather than take the wording on trust.
AI astrology vs a human reading: what each does
Astroliya offers only AI astrologers, and says so wherever they appear. They are not pandits, and they do not have years of experience, a family or a lineage, because none of that would be true. Here is a fair comparison:
| Astroliya's AI astrologer | A person reading your chart | |
|---|---|---|
| Chart calculation | Done by the engine, identical every time | Done by software or by hand; varies by reader |
| Consistency | Same rules applied to every chart | Depends on the reader's school and judgement |
| Shows its reasoning | Shows a card for each finding it relies on | Varies |
| Availability and language | Any hour, Hindi or English | Depends on the person |
| Life context | Only what you type | Can draw on conversation and lived experience |
| Judgement in hard situations | Limited, and it says so | Can be deeper, or can be worse |
Neither is a substitute for your own judgement. If you prefer a person, that is a reasonable choice, and the free kundli is still yours to take to them.
What it won't do
The AI works under the same instructions in every chat, whatever you ask:
- No medical, legal or financial advice. It will not tell you to stop a medicine, sign a contract or buy a share. For those, see a qualified professional.
- No fear. It will not predict death, illness or disaster, and it will not use a dosha to frighten you into a remedy.
- No promises. Astrology describes tendencies and timing in the tradition's terms; the AI does not claim an outcome will happen.
- Remedies are optional. A mantra or practice may be mentioned as something tradition recommends, never as something you must do or buy.
- Crisis comes first. If a conversation suggests someone may be thinking of harming themselves, the chat sets the astrology aside and points to free support helplines.
What changes without an exact birth time
If you don't know your birth time, the engine reads the chart at 12:00 noon local time and leaves out the lagna and houses, because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours. In practice:
- Still usable: planet signs (unless the Moon changed sign that day), Moon-sign rules such as Sade Sati and Dhaiya, and major transits over your Moon.
- Not available: the Manglik check, house-based readings and anything from the lagna.
- Less exact: dasha dates, since they depend on the Moon's exact degree, which moves through the day.
The AI is told which parts are missing and should say so instead of filling the gap. More on this in kundli without birth time.
Privacy: what happens to your birth data
- Your birth details are used to calculate your chart. They are not sent to analytics, and neither is your phone number.
- Your chats are handled by outside AI companies, which write the replies. Keep that in mind before typing anything you would not put into any online service.
- Using your chats to improve Astroliya's AI is off unless you turn it on in Settings.
- You can delete a birth profile or your whole account at any time.
The longer version is on how Astroliya works, and questions about your data can go to support.
Questions people ask
Is Astroliya's AI astrologer a real person?
No. Every Astroliya astrologer is an AI and is labelled as AI in every chat. It reads a chart that Astroliya's engine calculated, and it does not pretend to have a name, a face or experience it doesn't have.
Is AI astrology accurate?
The chart calculation is checkable: positions, lagna and dasha dates can be compared with any reliable panchang. The interpretation follows Vedic tradition, which is not proven science and can simply not fit your life. Treat a reading as something to reflect on, not a verdict.
Does the AI make up planets or dates?
It is instructed not to. Positions and dates come from the calculation in step 1 and the rule findings in step 2, and the AI is told to answer only from those and to tag the findings it used. If a reply ever states something the cards and your kundli don't show, trust the kundli and tell support.
Can I ask in Hindi?
Yes. Every Astroliya AI astrologer replies in Hindi or English, so you can ask in whichever you are more comfortable with. The chart and the findings behind the answer are the same in both languages.
What if I don't know my birth time?
You can still get a chart read at noon, with Moon-sign readings and transits, but without the lagna, houses or a Manglik check, and with less exact dasha dates. The AI should tell you which answers depend on the missing time.
