Vehicle Number Numerology: Is Your Number Plate Lucky for You?
In vehicle number numerology the state code counts too: every digit on the plate at face value, every letter by the Chaldean table, all reduced to one digit and set beside the owner's Mulank and life path.

Bring home a new scooter or car in India and someone in the family will ask about the number: "gadi number lucky hai ya nahi?" Vehicle number numerology is the usual way of answering that. The plate's letters and digits are added up to a single number, and that number is compared with the owner's own numbers from their date of birth. If the planets that rule the two numbers are traditionally friendly, the plate is read as a good match.
The method behind Astroliya's vehicle number calculator is published below in full, so you can redo any plate by hand and get the same answer. Whatever the total, a plate never made a car safe; paperwork and maintenance matter far more than any number.
Check a number plate in a minute
The quickest route is the free calculator at /tools/vehicle-number. It needs two things:
- The number plate, typed as it appears. Spaces and hyphens are ignored, so "MH 12 AB 1234" and "MH12AB1234" give the same answer.
- The owner's date of birth. It is used once for that reading and isn't saved.
You get the plate's total, the single-digit vehicle number and the graha (planet) that rules it. You also see how that number sits with the owner's Mulank and life path, and a list of the single digits that would suit that birth date best. No sign-in is needed.
How a number plate is added up
Indian plates mix letters and digits, so the first job is to give every character a value.
Digits count at face value. A 7 is 7, and a 0 is 0. Every digit on the plate is counted, including the ones in the district code.
Letters take Chaldean values. Chaldean numerology is widely used by Indian numerologists for names, and it gives each letter a value from 1 to 8. The number 9 is never assigned to a letter in this system. This is the table the calculator uses:
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, I, J, Q, Y |
| 2 | B, K, R |
| 3 | C, G, L, S |
| 4 | D, M, T |
| 5 | E, H, N, X |
| 6 | U, V, W |
| 7 | O, Z |
| 8 | F, P |
Every character counts. The state code (MH, DL, KA), the district digits, the series letters and the last four digits all go into the total. Readers who count only the last four digits are following a different, shorter method, so their answer can differ from ours.
The total is reduced to one digit. Add the digits of the total together, and keep going until one digit is left. A total of 25 becomes 2 + 5 = 7. A total of 47 becomes 4 + 7 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. That single digit, from 1 to 9, is the vehicle number.
Why the owner's birth date matters: Mulank and Bhagyank
A vehicle number on its own is just a digit. Numerology reads it against the person who will own or drive the vehicle, and that person's numbers come from their date of birth.
- Mulank (root or psychic number) is the day of the month you were born, reduced to one digit. Born on the 14th? 1 + 4 = 5.
- Bhagyank (destiny number, or life path) comes from the whole date. The calculator adds up every digit of the year, the month and the day, then reduces the result to one digit.
Our guide to Mulank and Bhagyank walks through both with more examples, and the numerology calculator works them out for you. For a plate reading, all you need is the two single digits.
Friendly, neutral or at odds: the graha behind each number
In Indian numerology, each number from 1 to 9 is linked with a graha:
| Number | Graha |
|---|---|
| 1 | Sun (Surya) |
| 2 | Moon (Chandra) |
| 3 | Jupiter (Guru) |
| 4 | Rahu |
| 5 | Mercury (Budh) |
| 6 | Venus (Shukra) |
| 7 | Ketu |
| 8 | Saturn (Shani) |
| 9 | Mars (Mangal) |
Jyotish has a long-standing table of natural friendships between the grahas. In that table the Sun counts the Moon, Mars and Jupiter as friends, for example, while Saturn counts Mercury and Venus as friends. The classical table covers only the seven visible grahas; Rahu and Ketu were added by later astrologers, and schools differ on their friendships. Astroliya's calculator uses the same friendship table as its kundli engine, including its Rahu and Ketu entries, so a number reading never contradicts what a chart reading on the site says about the same planets.
The comparison is made from the vehicle number's side: the question is how the plate's graha regards the owner's graha. When both numbers have the same graha, the result counts as friendly. Each comparison earns points:
| Relationship | Points |
|---|---|
| Friendly | 50 |
| Neutral | 30 |
| At odds | 12 |
The plate is compared twice, once with the Mulank and once with the Bhagyank, and the two scores are added. That gives a total out of 100:
| Score | What the calculator says |
|---|---|
| 90 or more | An excellent match |
| 70 to 89 | A good match |
| 50 to 69 | A neutral match |
| Below 50 | A weak match |
Only six scores are possible: 100 (friendly with both), 80 (friendly and neutral), 62 (friendly with one, at odds with the other), 60 (neutral with both), 42 (neutral and at odds) and 24 (at odds with both).
Worked examples on one sample plate
These are illustrations, not real people. The figures follow the calculator's rules step by step, so you can check each line.
Example 1: MH 12 AB 1234 for an owner born 14 August 1990
The plate first. M is 4, H is 5, then 1 and 2, A is 1, B is 2, then 1, 2, 3 and 4. That is 4 + 5 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 25, and 2 + 5 = 7. The vehicle number is 7, ruled by Ketu.
Now the owner. The Mulank comes from the 14th: 1 + 4 = 5. The Bhagyank comes from the whole date: the year 1990 gives 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, the month gives 8 and the day gives 1 + 4 = 5. That makes 32, and 3 + 2 = 5. Both numbers belong to Mercury.
Ketu's view of Mercury is neutral in the friendship table, so the plate scores 30 + 30 = 60: a neutral match. Nothing is wrong with the plate. It simply isn't one of this owner's strongest numbers. For this birth date, plates that reduce to 2, 4, 5, 6 or 8 would each score 100, while 3 and 9 would score 24.
Example 2: the same plate for an owner born 9 November 1994
The plate still totals 25 and reduces to 7 (Ketu). This owner's Mulank is 9 (Mars), from the 9th. The Bhagyank is 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 = 23 for the year, plus 1 + 1 = 2 for November, plus 9 for the day. That makes 34, and 3 + 4 = 7 (Ketu).
Ketu regards Mars as a friend, and Ketu matched with Ketu counts as friendly. The score is 50 + 50 = 100: an excellent match. The same plate reads very differently for two people, which is why a "lucky number list" that ignores your birth date tells you little.
Example 3: a different plate for the first owner
Take KA 05 MN 7788 for the owner born 14 August 1990. K is 2, A is 1, then 0 and 5. M is 4, N is 5, then 7, 7, 8 and 8. The total is 47, which reduces to 11 and then 2, ruled by the Moon. The Moon regards Mercury as a friend, and this owner's Mulank and Bhagyank are both 5 (Mercury), so the plate scores 50 + 50 = 100.
Vehicle numbers 1 to 9 at a glance
This table shows how each vehicle number relates to each owner number (Mulank or Bhagyank) in the calculator's friendship table. Read across from your plate's number.
| Vehicle number | Friendly with owner numbers | Neutral | At odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Sun) | 1, 2, 3, 9 | 5 | 4, 6, 7, 8 |
| 2 (Moon) | 1, 2, 5 | 3, 6, 8, 9 | 4, 7 |
| 3 (Jupiter) | 1, 2, 3, 9 | 4, 7, 8 | 5, 6 |
| 4 (Rahu) | 4, 5, 6, 8 | 3, 7 | 1, 2, 9 |
| 5 (Mercury) | 1, 4, 5, 6 | 3, 7, 8, 9 | 2 |
| 6 (Venus) | 4, 5, 6, 8 | 3, 7, 9 | 1, 2 |
| 7 (Ketu) | 6, 7, 8, 9 | 3, 4, 5 | 1, 2 |
| 8 (Saturn) | 4, 5, 6, 8 | 3, 7 | 1, 2, 9 |
| 9 (Mars) | 1, 2, 3, 9 | 4, 6, 8 | 5, 7 |
Two things stand out. First, no vehicle number is "lucky for everyone": each one suits some birth dates and not others. Second, the friendships are not always mutual. A plate of 2 counts as friendly to an owner number of 5, but a plate of 5 is at odds with an owner number of 2. That follows the classical table itself: the Moon regards Mercury as a friend, while Mercury regards the Moon as an enemy.
What this reading can't tell you
Astrologers traditionally treat a lucky vehicle number as a small, supportive factor, a bit like picking an auspicious colour. It is not a forecast. Here is what the reading does not mean:
- It says nothing about safety. A weak match doesn't mean an accident is coming, and an excellent match doesn't protect anyone. Road safety comes from the driver, the vehicle's condition and the road, not from a total.
- It doesn't predict resale value, breakdowns or fuel costs. Those depend on the make, the model and how the vehicle is looked after.
- It isn't a reason to skip anything practical. Valid registration, insurance and a current pollution (PUC) certificate come first. So do regular servicing, tyres and brakes, helmets and seat belts.
- It doesn't replace your own chart. Numerology reads one or two numbers. A kundli looks at the whole sky at your birth, and the two are different kinds of reading.
Choosing the day as well as the number
Many families care as much about when a new vehicle comes home as about its number. The traditional answer is a muhurat: an auspicious window chosen from the day's panchang. Astroliya's muhurat finder lists suitable windows for buying or bringing home a vehicle. It works when you're signed in. Like the number, a muhurat is a matter of tradition and comfort, and it sits alongside the practical checks above, never in place of them.

Questions people ask
Are the state-code letters counted in vehicle number numerology?
Yes, in Astroliya's method every letter and digit on the plate counts, including the state code and district number. Some readers count only the last four digits, which is a different method and can give a different vehicle number. If you compare our result with another source, check which characters they added up first.
Does the same method work for a two-wheeler?
Yes. The calculator reads whatever characters are on the plate, so a scooter or motorcycle number is totalled exactly like a car's. The comparison with the owner's Mulank and Bhagyank is the same too.
Whose birth date should I use for a family car?
The calculator reads one birth date at a time. Many families use the registered owner's date, and others use the person who drives it most. You can run the check once for each person and see how the plate sits with each of them. A different answer for each person is normal and doesn't mean the plate is wrong for the family.
What is a lucky vehicle number for me?
It depends on your date of birth, not on a universal list. Enter your birth date and any plate at /tools/vehicle-number, and the result ranks all nine single digits for you, best first. Digits that are friendly with both your Mulank and your Bhagyank score highest.
Should I change my vehicle number if it's a weak match?
There's no need to. In the tradition, a vehicle number is a minor factor, and a weak score doesn't predict harm. Changing a registered number involves official paperwork and cost, so weigh that before acting on a number reading. If you'd like to talk it through, Astroliya's AI astrologer can explain how your plate and your numbers relate.
